What Linda's students and their parents have to say...
"I want to let you know how frequently we thank our lucky stars that we found you to teach piano to Megan, two years ago. Although she had taken lessons for six years prior to you, she had never learned to love the simple act of playing - your bringing her to that awareness is greater than any skills she could have learned. Of course, it is also true that your skills as an instructor help, especially technique and theory, and your own love of piano is infectious. Megan no longer needs to be reminded to practice, her skills have advanced at an amazing rate, and she looks forward to her piano lesson. Thank you so much for helping her achieve a love of music that will stay with her for the rest of her life." R.M., Toluca Lake
"Thank you for the great progress you've made teaching piano to my daughter, Kristin, over the last two years. Your teaching methods and fantastic books that you've created have combined to produce solid results. The ear training exercises have been especially helpful in attuning Kristin's ears to the intervallic relationships between the notes. Kristin enjoys playing the piano and has developed a facility and ease of playing that she only could have attained by using your methods. She has played in one recital that you produced and I hope she'll be in the next one you're planning. Thank you for your sensitivity and caring teaching method that has enabled Kristin to flourish under your tutelage." D.R., Sherman Oaks
"I enrolled with Linda Wehrli's Pastimes for a Lifetime as a beginner student in piano and art instruction over a year ago. I started to learn to play the piano when I was 12 years old but did not go very far with this attempt. I only knew how to read notes by their Latin names (Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do!) and I only knew eight Bass Clef and eight G Clef notes. I thought notes had a corresponding number. And whenever I looked at a piece I would look for these numbers and if I don't find them, then that would be the end of that piece and me. I could not read music or interpret symbols in a piece because I didn't know what the notes stood for or how to play them. I didn't know that different notes had different names and beats and that I have to count in my head while playing a piece! All these changed when I started learning with Linda. She taught me how to read notes and symbols often encountered in piano pieces. She taught me to count and be in tune with the beat and not just to rush playing a piece to complete it. And most importantly, she taught me to listen and identify notes as they are played. Her ear training CD which is an invaluable tool for tone deaf people like me taught me to distinguish one pitch from another and enabled me to memorize and retain that pitch in my head. She taught me to analyze a piece from the standpoint of both the composer and the period the composer lived in. She taught me to read basic to intermediate music by classical and contemporary composers. Now, I am able to read and play piano pieces that I like and even finish the ones I started years ago. I can now go to a music store and purchase a piano piece and actually play it for my own enjoyment or share it with others.
"Linda is enthusiastic about her craft. She is also determined that we should learn what she had to teach. She is disciplined with herself and with us. (With Linda I have realized that the greater the art, the greater the mental and physical discipline involved to produce it.) Linda is also patient with our individual learning abilities and always encourages us to keep trying and perfect the skills we have acquired in class. Because I work an eight-to-five job (and do not spend my waking days painting and playing the piano, much as I would like to), Linda understands my need to balance my work with my desire to hone my creative skills; she has always been encouraging and supportive in this regard.
"Linda Wehrli's Pastimes for a Lifetime has resurrected my creative life, which I thought had died when, all those years ago, I put away my art pencils in defeat and slammed the piano shut in frustration. But even when I shelved the dream, I would think about it every now and then. The bird who was grounded by ignorance and lack of skill would sometimes look at the blue sky and wonder what the wind must feel like. All I needed was a willingness to learn. Linda showed me the way up. And I soared." C.G.
"Our son, Andrew Fisher has been taking piano lessons with Linda Wehrli for the last two years. During this time Andrew has improved his sight-reading and now understands the tempo and tone each piece of music requires. Linda's love of music and the piano has inspired Andrew to further his learning more difficult pieces. We highly recommend Linda and her program, Pastimes for a Lifetime to anyone who aspires to be a great pianist." J.F. & R.F.
"It's been a little more than a year since I started taking piano lessons from Linda Wehrli. I am quite pleased with my progress, thanks principally to Linda's tutelage. There is no doubt that her instruction and professionalism would greatly assist any individual interested in learning to play the piano. Her instruction books are logically and simply designed, providing a clear roadmap for the student I also feel that Linda conveys a distinctive love of music that is so important in the teaching of any musical instrument. Because of the personal and professional qualities that I have observed in Linda Wehrli, I highly recommend her as a teacher for any beginning, intermediate or advanced student." J.M.
"I began studying piano with Linda after a 45-year absence from formal lessons. Although I knew the basics of reading music, I lacked any serious knowledge of theory and technique. I appreciate Linda's systematic approach to teaching piano. each week she assigns scales, exercises to build finger strength, exercises to learn pitch and one or two pieces of music. Learning the scales and related chords helps me understand the structure of the music and gain insight into the composer's intent. Linda shares her personal experience as a musician and makes the study relevant to my goals. Along with acquiring skill at playing the piano, I'm discovering a new enjoyment of all music. I recommend Linda as an effective teacher. Her approach to teaching is comprehensive and well-rounded. In additions to increasing my skill, Linda's method contributes to understanding and enjoyment of the music." B.A., Toluca Lake
"When picking up Sophia from her art class one afternoon, I happened to sit in on the last few minutes of one of Linda's piano lessons. Again, I was impressed by the quality and attention Linda gave to teaching music; so impressed that I decided to enroll Sophia in piano classes as well. After a few months, I am happy to say my instincts were correct. My daughter is able to read and play music, something I couldn't say after years of lessons with other music teachers. I am thoroughly pleased with Sophia's progress at Pastimes in both art and piano. I highly recommend Linda as a teacher. She is a superb human being with teaching qualities that commands respect and admiration from her students – and their parents too. It is my pleasure to have her instruct and guide Sophia through art and music and it will be yours too." S.G.
"Recently, Jessie began taking piano lessons with Linda Wehrli. After studying piano with two other teachers in the past and eventually losing interest, I was doubtful that she would want to continue. It's been a few months and she seems to be learning more, and enjoying it more than before." T.B., Valley Village
"My daughter has studied piano with Mrs. Wehrli for over five years, learning good piano theory basics and technique. Through recitals, my daughter has gained poise and confidence. She can read and play a variety of classical and jazz music which she can enjoy her whole life and delight others who listen to her play." J.M., La Canada
"In just a short time, I have seen my girls blossom under your guidance. Their enthusiasm for learning is contagious. We all look forward to gathering around the piano to hear their latest piece.....Your music classes have added a wonderful dimension to our family life." K.J., Northridge
"She has worked with him (Kevin) on all aspects of music - from note reading to rhythm to playing a variety of piano pieces.....She encourages and challenges her students to improve and strengthen their skills. In two years of piano instruction, Kevin has shown wonderful growth in his piano playing." A.R. and M.R., Mission Hills
"Zubin's piano lessons are giving him an opportunity to not just appreciate good music, but actually participate in creating it. He has come a long way since first starting piano lessons and we look forward to his first recital." S.G., Los Angeles
