What our students and their parents have to say...
"I enrolled with Linda Wehrli's Pastimes for a Lifetime as a beginner student in piano and art instruction over a year ago. Before I enrolled with Linda, I knew only how to draw the simplest of objects. Human beings were sticks and objects were a combination of basic shapes of circles, squares and triangles. The only painting media I thought I knew how to use was charcoal and even with that, I had no confidence in my results. My attempts at using oils would have made the masters turn over in their graves (think oil on paper!) . Although I did not want for the desire to express myself, it did not seem like my ability, knowledge and skill would be capable of transmuting vision into reality. I felt like a bird who possessed the idea of flight but did not know how to get from tree to soaring sky. What Linda essentially did for me was point out that I had wings. And then she showed me how to use them. Or in art parlance, she taught me the importance of negative space and how it relates to the figure I was trying to draw. She taught me to mix colors and to create works unique to own interpretation and not just copy from a picture or someone's work. In her fine arts class I learned to paint using different media and techniques of application. I started with charcoal paints and has since advanced to oil paints. Before I enrolled with Linda, I could only wish and dream that I could paint. Now, when I look at something that I want to commit canvas or paper, I already have a visual in my head of how to go about it and which media I can work with. And I have since learned to use oils on canvas!
"Linda is enthusiastic about her craft. She is also determined that we should learn what she had to teach. She is disciplined with herself and with us. (With Linda I have realized that the greater the art, the greater the mental and physical discipline involved to produce it.) Linda is also patient with our individual learning abilities and always encourages us to keep trying and perfect the skills we have acquired in class. Because I work an eight-to-five job (and do not spend my waking days painting and playing the piano, much as I would like to), Linda understands my need to balance my work with my desire to hone my creative skills; she has always been encouraging and supportive in this regard.
"Linda Wehrli's Pastimes for a Lifetime has resurrected my creative life, which I thought had died when, all those years ago, I put away my art pencils in defeat and slammed the piano shut in frustration. But even when I shelved the dream, I would think about it every now and then. The bird who was grounded by ignorance and lack of skill would sometimes look at the blue sky and wonder what the wind must feel like. All I needed was a willingness to learn. Linda showed me the way up. And I soared." C.G.
"It is my pleasure to introduce the art studio, Pastimes for a Lifetime, where my daughter Elizabeth has been taking lessons from Linda Wehrli for two years. Even as a toddler, my daughter showed focused interest and noticeable talent in drawing and she developed her artistic skills by taking art lessons since age 4. Her journey through two major art studios for children had been relatively satisfying but it was when Elizabeth settled in Linda's studio that everyone noticed what a serious artist my daughter was turning into. Unlike any other art studios, Pastimes is operated by someone whose artistic talent and teaching skills become such inspiration for the students: It is not a commercialized lesson institute. Rather, it is a personal, intimate learning class where students may improve their artistic techniques and mature their artistic perspectives through Linda's carefully crafted teaching sessions for the individual need of each student. Elizabeth once confessed that she never knew that there could be so much to learn to improve her paintings with new skills until she met Linda and now, she is a proud artist in drawing and painting whose artistic level impresses her teachers at school. She brings home A's in her Drawing and Painting Courses at Campbell Hall School without exception. Her school recommended her to join the advanced painting course and the year book staff for her sophomore year. That was quite a complement for a 14-year-old. If anyone is serious and focused in art, it is imperative to find a right place to expand his/her artistic skills with a sense of appreciation in depth. However, it is also true that anything, including art, cannot totally escape from the overly commercialized trend of today's society. Under the circumstances, Linda successfully provides a safe, even spiritual haven for her students who are thirsty for the professional yet emotionally enriching learning experiences in the world of genuine art." C.A.
"Let me take this opportunity to express my appreciation and gratitude towards your dedication and commitment to Art. Over the past year my daughter and I have had the pleasure and reward of being part of your wonderful studio, we no longer see this as an art class, in our view it has transformed into a weekly mother daughter afternoon outing. This is by far one of our favorite pastimes together. It is in this wonderful nurturing environment at your studio that our relationship with each other and with something we both enjoy doing has blossomed and grown stronger. Linda your diligent guidance has facilitated our growth, our increased knowledge and understanding of the various medium and techniques you have exposed us to. We continue to increase our skill and grow under your tutelage and look forward to our weekly outings." M.O. & K.O.
"I first saw examples of artwork from Pastimes at last year's show. I was mesmerized from the moment I laid eyes on the students' work, and I immediately knew my daughter, Sophia, could benefit by studying here. I'm not sure what I expected but I loved the overall atmosphere – students seemed to be fully involved and dedicated to their projects all the while expressing enjoyment in their creativity. I just hoped that Sophia could one day be as passionate about her work as they seemed to be. Today, Sophia is enjoying every moment of her classes and will make a big fuss if we are caught in traffic, or running late for class for whatever reason. She has learned so much in a very short period of time and looks forward to every class because Linda is a fun, informative and engaging teacher that she enjoys learning from and spending time with. When picking up Sophia from her art class one afternoon, I happened to sit in on the last few minutes of one of Linda's piano lessons. Again, I was impressed by the quality and attention Linda gave to teaching music; so impressed that I decided to enroll Sophia in piano classes as well. After a few months, I am happy to say my instincts were correct. My daughter is able to read and play music, something I couldn't say after years of lessons with other music teachers. I am thoroughly pleased with Sophia's progress at Pastimes in both art and piano. I highly recommend Linda as a teacher. She is a superb human being with teaching qualities that commands respect and admiration from her students – and their parents too. It is my pleasure to have her instruct and guide Sophia through art and music and it will be yours too." S.G.
"I remember bringing my seven-year-old son, Antonio, to Linda's studio for the first time. It was one of those great moments you have as a parent, when you realize that you have found something really special for your child to experience. We entered her charming studio with hardwood floors and jazz music softly playing as her students set up their artwork at their easels. I was amazed at the quality of the artwork the children were creating, like little Picasso's! My son has been a student of Linda's for two years now; his drawings and color pastels are some of the beautiful pieces of art that grace the walls in our home. He is now ready to learn to work with acrylics and he is excited and eager to begin. Linda is a lovely person, a professional who is devoted to her students. With her expertise and attention to detail, she has created a magical place for children of all ages to find their own unique artistic expression. We are fortunate to have someone as knowledgeable as her for a teacher. Her affiliation with so many organizations in the community has given my son the opportunity to exhibit his art at The Rotary Club's "Festival of Arts". He was also one of the artists invited to donate a piece of his art for "Big Sunday," a fundraiser that helped raise money for the veterans of war. Thanks to Linda Wehrli, drawing, painting and creating art will be a "Pastime for a Lifetime" for my son Antonio." L.B.
"Since my daughter Jessie started taking art lessons from Linda Wehrli, she has really blossomed as a budding artist. I'm amazed at the progress she has made in the last couple of years. Linda's method of teaching, along with her patience and caring, has provided Jessie with the opportunity to express herself at the easel and to enjoy a lovely artistic experience. More recently, Jessie began taking piano lessons with Linda Wehrli. After studying piano with two other teachers in the past and eventually losing interest, I was doubtful that she would want to continue. It's been a few months and she seems to be learning more, and enjoying it more than before." T.B., Valley Village
"I have been studying at Pastimes for a Lifetime under Linda's teaching and guidance for well over a year now and it's been an amazing journey. Linda's knowledge and understanding of art is simply superb. I have learned an immense amount about art history and technique, as well as the study of color, tone, blending, lines, and brush application. Her technique of learning through doing and practice has been incredibly enriching. The atmosphere she creates in her studio is perfect for those seeking calm and focus on their work. I have had many art teachers through school, but she is the first one to give me the individual attention I need and also the freedom I need to create and find my own technique. She displays student work in different ways, whether it hangs at an art show or in a local business, and this has been an exciting and rewarding experience for myself and other students. I cannot express enough how fulfilling and productive my time at Pastimes with Linda has been. I am so proud of the work I've accomplished and I never thought before that I could do it. If you're even considering dabbling in a bit of art, definitely attend one of her classes. Linda is truly a wonderful and exceptional teacher of art. I offer my highest recommendation for her." S.S., Calabasas
"Through your very patient and attentive teaching, they (my sons Zachary and Justin) have become very talented and avid artists.....they also truly appreciate art in every form and most assuredly will for the rest of their lives." S.M., Van Nuys
"Linda truly cares about the arts and makes it her mission to expose her students to different techniques and styles. Her intimate class size allows her to spend time with each student." S.W. and C.W., Glendale
"My daughter began taking art classes from Linda, and I was so impressed with her patience and ability that I also began taking classes.....Linda has encouraged my daughter and myself not to just do the traditional, but to move on to different techniques and we have learned a great deal under Linda's tutelage." J.B., Valley Village
"We are very impressed with the art studio. Mrs. Wehrli has created a wonderful atmosphere for art lovers to learn in.....She is an excellent teacher who guides each student individually with great care and attention." P.A. and D.A., Van Nuys
"Linda teaches fine art and not garage sale art. She instructs you how to pay attention to the detail in a picture, how to interpret it and break it apart onto your canvas. She is constantly supervising and instructing the entire class and stresses the importance of taking your time.....I am very impressed with her skills, knowledge and patience in her teaching." L.D., Valley Village
"I am a great believer in the contributions of the arts to education. I have tried several different programs for my children with mixed satisfaction. I have been extremely satisfied and gratified by what they have gained in many areas of skill and art appreciation as a result of the education they are receiving from Linda Wehrli. Her program has been rich, diverse and rewarding." D.S., North Hollywood
